Shattering smile

In the carnivorous heat

Of the red Accra sky

A little boy with

a face scorched by

Hunger looks through

A glass to see

Another little boy

Mimicking the callous

Look on his face

Through the glass

Is a face bitter

As memories of heartbreak

And eyes tired

From springing rivers

Of tears without end

Just like his.

Realizing that

He is not alone

Like the shy crescent

In a clear night sky

Turns his face sugary

With a gentle smile

That shatters the glass

Into hostile fragments

It is just him again

It’s has always been this way

But the effervescence

Of the smile lingers

In his mind as

He goes looking

For another glass

To break
